As a black player, would it be better to start mastering caro kann or the sicilian defense? I would be thankful for any suggestion guys.. i am trying to explore myself as booked player in black. :)

Sicilian.  Find a variation that suits your style (i.e. Najdorf or Dragon if you like sharp tactics or Sveshnikov or Scheviningen if you like solid positional play) and run with it.

You'll learn a lot about open games if you play the Sicilian.

I think that you'll learn a lot from learning the Sicilian.

My tactics have sharpened up a lot since I started playing it.  They had to!

Neither!  At your level, just play e5.  It's more important to get the basics before you go into that kind of stuff.

Lol, your joking right? e5 is more complicated than Caro Kann for sure and competes with Sicilian.

To the OP , play which one is more to your style! As a defensive and positional player I play the Caro Kann a lot but choose which one you are more  comftorable with.

Depends on what you want. The Caro-Kann is certainly easy to play, but it doesn't give black a whole lot of play. White can still win because of the space advantage. Black usually has to wait for the better endgame. If you're comfoertable with that, fair enough.

The Sicilian has it's own problems. Lots to learn and usually a weak pawn on d6. You really need to learn how to play this. Most players don't know a lot of theory, but they all know how to pile pieces on the d-file if they have no other plan. It's actually more fun if white castles queenside early on. In either case you must have your tactics ready. Know how to build up a meaningful attack on the c-file or break in the centre to neutralize and rid yourself of the d-pawn. It's a lot of work but worth it when you start to master it. :P

ReasonableDoubt: I play 1...e5 for the reasons you mention. But what do you think players of my level should play against 1. d4?

Sorry for hijacking the thread a bit.

QGD or slav (not semi) for the same reasons.

Truly thankful to you guys! I am just like you... chess enthusiast & chess addict. Still finding myself in the opening phase of this battlefield and your responses would be a genuine basis of my opening selection.

You're right ReasonableDoubt, I just have to develop my repertoire & know what I like best...

Dutchday, mastering it earlier would be best...

While I am honing caro kann & sicilian.. any further suggestion from you guys would be highly appreciated! Thank you!
