Caro-kann vs French Defense

I mostly have experience playing the French, so yeah I am a bit biased. So I'd go with that.

Don't let your dreams be dreams
Yesterday you said the French was bad, and you'd play the Caro tomorrow
So just Caro
Make your dreams come true
Just Caro

French players dream of success
While you're gonna wake up and work hard at it with the Caro
Nothing is impossible

You should get to the point
Where French players would quit
And you're not going to stop there
No, what are you waiting for?

Caro
Just Caro
Yes you can
Just Caro
If you're tired of starting over
Stop playing the French

The French is an excellent combination of the strategic and the counterattacking.  It emphasizes understanding of pawn structures, long-term planning, typical positions, and ability to solve thematic problems.  It rewards the devotee with a rock-solid, nigh-unbreakable defense against even the most aggressive attacks, yet leaves open the option for black to play in such a way that he can vigorously pursue the full point without abandoning his opening preparation.

By contrast, the Caro-Kann is for communists and sissies.

So you know, plusses and minuses both ways.  You decide.

Well man.

I don't want to say both openings are better than the other. But if you are beginner I better say go for Caro kann. Now I am 2000. Still I play the Caro kann and crush people. No hate to French. I am going to learn French theory and play games. As of my opinion, Caro Kann and French is way better than sicilian.

Don't talk like an immatured Kid. And when I see GM games, Caro Kann is many times rock solid than French. And about pawn structures, you really don't know anything if you said French is better. Caro Kann has way more to learn. In French, one has to only learn that advance pawn structure. In Caro kann no one knows about minority attack in the exchange variation.

The englund gambit (1. D4, E5) is a good way to defend, as people are often not ready for it.

Caro Kann is a slow, positional defense where you fall behind in development to have a better PAWN structure. All you have to do is to catch white's development and the ideas will be in silver platter in the middlegame. No weak PAWNS to worry about, no obvious weaknesses. You just gotta take your time, and use your superior strategic planning in the middle-game and an easy to play endgames.

But you can play the french if you are a coward that also works.

Caro kann is objectively better

I have been playing the Caro Kann for quite sometime now. Against the advanced variation (3.e5), I keep switching between Bf5 and c5, can anyone please suggest me which of the two is better?

I would say c5

Dodi232

but it depends on the opponent I would say

London system worked really well one time and I won against a player with a higher rating than mine

Dodi232

but then if you play against another player who will attack your bishop, it doesn't work well

AngryPuffer

the french is the agressive, counterattacking variation of the caro kann and is playable every upto the super gm level

the caro is more slower, passive, and they just hide behind their slav structure and try to trade everything off and hope to win an endgame
