Karpov (when playing Black) liked the so-called Nimzovich Variation:  1 e4 c6  2 d4 d5  3 Nc3 de  4 Ne4  Nd7.  Also often seen is 4...Nf6, and if 5 Nf6, then Black can play the solid 5...ef, or the more dynamic 5...gf.
