Think of Chess as war!
White declares war on black by playing the first move.
The chessboard is the battlefield. The centre line is the river. The middle four squares is the bridge over the river. Both forces should try to skirmish to control the bridge. Control the bridge (either by footmen (pawns) supported by the Horsement or by Snipers (bishops)).... you control the battlefield.
A good army deploys their forces swiftly and posts them at places of greatest strategic advantage. An army unit that continually moves around while in the deployment stage will not be as effective.
If an army controls the bridge then they can easily provide cover for the remainder of the army's troops that decide to cross the river route.
The king is the master. The deployer of the pieces. the king does not want any part of the battle until its almost mano-et-mano. He wants to be in the safest place possible away from the bridge and its line of fire. His lady should not be made to do too much until most other troops have been deployed.
I hope this analogy helps beginners on this site grasp Opening principles.
