chess opening software

Is there any chess opening software that you can practice against where you can just pick a generic opening?

e.g. I may want to practice against the Ruy Lopez as white or the Caro Kann as black.  Both opening are just a few moves, but have many variations after those first few moves.  I want the training program to throw random lines at me after those initial moves.  I would also like the program to throw mistake lines at me, so that I can learn how to take advantage of those mistakes.

Is there any software out there like that?  I'm not talking about something that you have to create your own lines and load them into the program.  I'm talking about something that is ready to use out of the box.

So Fritz 12 will also play wrong lines for you as well, so that you can take advantage of mistakes?

Even Fritz 10 can play `inferior' lines. Just play the opening up to where you want Fritz to start playing at a lower level, or `out of book', then select `levels' from the 'game' options. If you choose `handicap and fun' you can set the strength all the way down to 1300+. I'm sure the program will make a few `mistakes' at that level!

Also, you could first put Fritz in `analysis' mode. Play through as much or little of the book lines until you memorize what you want, then turn off `analysis' mode and select `handicap and fun' from game level options.

Otherwise, to save time, you can select `opening trainig' where there are a preset number of opening moves.

Don't forget you can also turn the opening book off completely, so that Fritz will always play a `computer' move based on the strength level you select.

There are so many features in Fritz that have taken me years to discover, but, reading the instructions takes almost as long!

Hope this helps.

Thanks.  Doesn't sound like Fritz does what I want.  I don't want to switch around between modes.  I want an opening trainer that will throw out different lines of a certain opening.  Some of them correct (book).  Some of them wrong (out of book, possibly leading to good tactics).  Much like what happens when you play a human player.  I've searched and searched, and there doesn't seem to be such a tool available.

Here's the thing. There are millions of chessplayers, and most of them want slightly different things. You are not gonna find out of the box software that does exactly what you want, because it was written by someone who wants something slightly different.

But here's the good news.

If you are prepared to put in some hours, you can get most of these programs to do exactly what you want. The big trick (IMO), is to have a large database which includes lower level games where players actually fall for traps.

You can find such games here: http://www.pgnmentor.com/files.html

and use it in conjunction with something like SCID
