If you want to go for something classical and solid I would certainly just go for the Petroff. If you play Nc6, White has a big say in what happens after that.
Classical Response against 1.e4

I am not afraid of theory and many responses, I should just like what I am playing, Petroff is good but I really want to play e5 nc6 following karpov/spassky footsteps.
I like the classical ruy lopez. whether it be chigorin or breyer.
I need to ask about Italian, which move order to choose from? 3..nf6 or 3..bc5?
looking at the principles knights before bishops is the rule of thumb and probably best is 3..nf6 but i dont like this
I play the Petroff and French - both of which classical openings and popular in the 60s.
Petroff you had Smyslov as probably the most notable in the 60s, but Anand, Gelfand, Kramnik, amongst others, played it quite a bit.
French Defense in the 60s? Look no further than Uhlmann and Korchnoi.

Thanks for mentioning the Petroff practitioners, they definitely fit the playstyle I was looking for. The French is noted as a suggestion, and I believe the Winawer was quite popular back then. I’ve set the French aside for now, but I’ll definitely give it a try someday.
I want to play classically and solidly against e4 like the masters used to play in the 60's, What should i play?
I play QGD as black and find it the perfect choice for me.
I know the first move will be 1..e5 followed up with nc6 in case they attack my e5 pawn. But what systems to choose within?
Petroff is classical and nice too, but maybe I'll add that later.
