Very funny TGA. I was simply answering the OP in a sarcastic manner. Do you know which sport is noted as a "war of attrition"? It's not chess but I postulate that chess is indeed the same...war of attrition. Any world champion is certainly one who earned his title.

I doubt you could find any top grandmaster who would say Magnus isn't the best player now. I'd even expect Hikaru and Gukesh to say Magnus is the best. That's because he is.

Magnus of course. The question would be Magnus or Kasparov? Only Indian can put Gukesh in comparision with the GOAT.

Magnus Carlsen is far better than Gukesh. Magnus is the highest rated player in history. Hes dominated the number 1 spot for years and years. Hes a 5 x world Champion and would have been an 8 time champ by now if he didnt leave. And he went on the longest unbeaten streak in history, not losing a single game for 125 games.
On the other hand, Gukesh is the worst world champion of all time, and is not even the best indian player right now. Hes also only the 10th highest rated player right now. Who ever wins the candidates will likely beat him.
