if the opponent just plays Bc4 you have to respond with g6, and now you have a misplaced bishop. Why go for a "nearly equal" position if you can destroy your opponent with classic anti-scholars mate defence?

Well, as you can see, scholars mate only works for like players who have 400 elo or below, and for 500 ~ 1000 they would just take the free pawn.
This isn't a 100% serious gambit, because it only happens in like 500~1200 elo, and black has like 0.1 advantage.
So you can choose not to play it.
Knight's Gambit
The king now cant castle and is in the open while also opening a diagonal for future checks, and it also cost just a single knight, because the king takes the knight the d4 pawn can be defended on the next move.
If the king doesnt take and moves the queen, you win a rook anyway even though the gambit is declined
Or if they are -1000 elo and goes "ooga booga i take d4 pawn" take their queen, show them no mercy.(jk)
