well it does...but not so much of an edge that white couldnt outplay black if hes the better player. So its a reasonable choice especially if you think you are stronger than your opponent, or your opponent isnt familar.

6...bg7 was a strange move...the standard move is 6...g4, then ...f3 and later white has to sac on f3 to create an attack...and its rather speculative...but not terrible.

Can't White just undermine g4/f3 with h3?

Talking about sacrifices in alekhine there is very nasty gambit in chase variation. Black must be very careful... very interesting way for white to play!!!

You were not talking about Gm's of modern times, right? The defending technique made progress and its the time of strong computers and accurate moves. Can it be good for white when the computer( rated around 3100) says that white gives away his whole advantage in move 2 with the Kingsgambit and that black will even be slightly better when he knows what he is doing? Surely the only positive factor for the kingsgambit is the practical chance to pose your opponent some problems but in this time where defencing resources get more known, black has really nothing to fear about. Which modern GM plays the kingsgambit, it would already be enough to tell me one name, but I am not sure if there is one. Okay, at club level it is anyway not a bad opening but surely more as a surprise weapon and not as a long-term weapon because against every well prepared opponent you wont score good with it, or at least you wont reach anything with the kingsgambit. There are simply to many good lines for black and often even white is the one who might get punished for a little mistake( as in the Nc6,f5 lines). Dont take this personal and play on with your kingsgambit, but once you get better you will change this opening for sure.

Are you just a troll? Yes I was speaking about modern GMs.  They haven't given up the KG at least not in rapid or blitz. Carlsen, Nakamura, Short, Gallagher, Ivanchuck and Morozevich have all recentlly played the KG.

Any categorical statement that the KG is pointless and isn't used by stronger players such as yourself is factually incorrect.  I suspect that Nakamura just hasn't uncorked one for you yet but do post the game for us.

well its legal...but it doesnt tend to work...it certainly opens the white king more that white would be comfortable with. An eventual Nxf3 is more standard. Note that black can always play h5, and he has a pretty solid grip on g4 because of his light square bishop

I'm planning on castling long though, and ...h5 can probably be met by hg followed by taking over the h-file. IIRC h3 is the plan recommended by Shaw in his KG book

Rox0r0x you should try to reat correctly. I said, you can play it because of the good practical chances, but you can ONLY play it as a surprise weapon because otherwise you will get into many prepared lines and lose in Less than 20 moves. There are many hypercorrect openings like the queensgambit that you can play your whole life, but the kingsgambit is definetely not a hypercorrect and super solid opening choice, right? And yes there is no Top player who is frequently playing the kingsgambit, Magnus Carlsen also just used it as a surprise weapon in his game.

pfren

All openings are bad if you blunder wood randomly.

Devilish_Bad_Games

So the correct way to meet that gambit is even more crazy :)))

I think i won this game just because of opening. It looks like 1800(been 2000+!)also knows techniques how to blunder wood in couple of moves with a help of gambit opening. Yep simple 5.qd5 was a killer... infact very elementary one after they passively develops bishop(blocking queen access to f7 defenses). following with d5 opening center if they take, sac a pawn with c3 to open it more to add that qd5 amongst other things as a threat. I checked bishop takes f7 line first (which is best move in similar positions where black develops his bishop to more aggresive, better square on c5 counter attacking on f2 and white can solve f2 defense issue by this bxf7+ and qd5 trick) and saw that position is just fantastic for white and cheekily pushed that wood without further thinking :))) ok ok i got to be honest... I understand that i just played some strong players 4 y old nephew or sth. Its just not possible other way, but anyway here it is :)))
