I would suggest you look at the Game Explorer on this site. Play over the most popular lines only to about four or five moves and then use them for experience.

If the only thing keeping you from switching to 1.d4 is uncertainty over how you'll respond to the Englund gambit, you should probably just go for it.
If you look at the Game Explorer, you find that after 1.d4 e5 the most populr reply--by a very wide margin--is 2.e4. This is really curious, since after 1.e4 e5 2.d4, reaching the identical position, is rarely played.
Of course, the Game Explorer also shows that 2.dxe5 is much more successful (+ 61.4%, = 10.2%. -28.4% or 66.5 - 33.5)
Paul, that's because chess.com's Game Explorer counts the # of games with the resulting positions (ie. games with the position after 1.d4 e5 2.e4, including of course Blackmar Diemer Gambit's games starting with 1.e4 d5 2.d4).
In my database, counting only the moves actually played after the exact sequence 1.d4 e5, here is the split without any rating filter :
- 2.dxe5 : 410 games
- 2.e4 : 14 games
- 2.others : 80 games
