They are both not bad, but I prefer 1.d4

I play d4 more frequently now. My winning percentage has increased with that opening. Though you need to have a basic understanding of positional play.

I play 1.d4 in OTB tournaments and 1.e4 in Online chess .Both are very good and leads to midlegame with a slight plus

I love e4 but i think for a beginner player like i am maybe d4 is better...

Avatar of consalvo

both openings are good. it just depends on the style , and character of the player.but the most important thing is how you finish the game.THE ENDS  JUSTIFIES  THE BEGINNINGS.........

I think e4 is better because of the more space. When I play d4 I feel cramped.

e4 is never more complicated , it leads to open or semi-open games were tactics is the main theme.....thats why its always recommended for beginners....the d4 is much more positional and worse it puts u under the TRANSPOSITION , where the opponent can take u from an opening to another without prior notice.....only play d4 when u r really ready for it

I'm more comportable with e4 and I like having the space to move my bishops and queen around if I need to. Other than that I try to vary my openings. I often play Nf3 as it can become anything. And Of course I play d4 a lot too.

I also want to familiarize myself more with c4. A friend of mine plays this almost exclusively and it's just as good as a lot of other openings.

I think it's good to play lots of different openings as it gives you a real edge if you ever get to play against them. You tend to have a better understanding of what is important for that opening.

DEAR MEMBERS,  IRESPECTFULLY DISAGREE WITH  Apokalyps,  ABOVE,  YES OPINIONS FROM  GM'S  ARE  GOOD,  BUT YOU  CAN'T FOREGO THE  OPINIONS OF OTHER MEMBERS WHO HAVE PLAYED  AND STUDIED MANY GAMES.

YOU HAVE TO BE OPEN MINDED  AND TAKE WHAT YOU FEEL IS GOOD AND THROW AWAY THE  BAD

THANKS  TONY,antne003,THIS IS  ONLY MY  OPI NION, SINCE I ENJOY  FEEDBACK FROM MEMBERS OF  THIS SITE.

e is 4 ecxiting, in e4 grand prix. d is 4 domination, in d4 but it can also be 4 dull; )

e4 all the way!!

I prefer e4 myself. It's more complicated and more interesting.Smile

d4 I think would make white more comfortable because there aren't as many tactics, but would give slightly less initiative and he may have to settle for a positional queenside attack, not that d4 can't generate attacks, if white can play both e4 and d4 his chances are good on either side. e4 is quicker, more attacking, and much more scary and tactical for both sides. i think it's good to get a variety of d4 and e4 so that you won't be getting into the same positions (maybe it's good for tournaments but for casual games why not try new things?). They are both very very good when played right (but that is the problem!). I'm getting opening books with repertoires for both.

e4. d4 tends to strengthen my tendency to end up in dull games.
