Yeah, it all comes down to taste since neither are objectively better than the other as far as current theory goes.
e4. its more simple.

d4, e4 has three dead draws, caro-kann, Berlin Wall and Petroff.
Not to mention sub variations like Keres Variation, Ruy Lopez
so I think instead of d4 or e4 , the best move is c4 !!
