Deadly Openings: How to Play and Avoid Them

The opening is a period of time where you usually develop your pieces and get your king to safety. However, some openings are much more aggressive.

The first opening worth noting is the Fried Liver Attack. It is characterized by the following moves: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5

If your opponent isn't wary of the threats on f7 (eg. 4...a6), Nxf7 wins the Rook. If the Queen or Rook moves, Bxf7+ still gives you the advantage (and if the Rook moved, it still wins the Rook). Most likely, the opponent will notice the threat and play 4...d5 (Bc5 can be countered with 5. 0-0 0-0 6. Nc3 h6 7. Nf3). Play 5. exd5, but as Black, do NOT play 5...Nxd5?. Instead play 5...Na5 6. Bb5+ Bd7 7. Bxd7 Qxd7. The puzzle below explains why not to play 5...Nxd5.

I will post more openings later, but for now, enjoy destroying people with the Liver!

4. Ng5 isn't the fried liver yet, only after 6. Nxf7?!, which is not so accurate because 6. d4! is much stronger. The variation you give after 4... Bc5 is dumb and makes the knight useless on g5.

Not all attacks are just for White. Take, for example, this trap:

White should NOT take the "free" pawn, as 4. Nxe4 results in 4...Qg5!
5. Nxf7 Qxg7 6. Rf1 Qxe4+, and Black wins the Queen or the game.

EthanSky...I would suggest growing past these "tricks" and really work on improving.
