dealing with g6

After 1. e4 g6, I don't know what to do. Sometimes I try this:

This, however, seems to put me in a bad position to control the center.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

There is nothing wrong with 2. D4. Having both the E-file and D-file pawns up at the same time is one of the most basic examples of excellent central. Your opponent most likely will go into what I think is called the "Modern Defense" (correct me if I'm wrong), which is 2. Bg6. 3. Nf3 should defend the D-file pawn from black's G-file bishop.

If you don't like using 2. D4, 2. Nf3 is also an acceptable means of grabbing central control. There's also 2. C4, which I'm not a fan of, I prefer 2. Nf3 over that.

d4 is fine for second move, it is the most played move there.

A simple and effective solution(doesn't always work though) against modern and Pirc is Nc3/Nf3, Be3, Qd2, 0-0-0 and kingside pawn storm initiated with "h" pawn push.

You can also go for "f" pawn push and castle short, in that case you should omit early Nf3.

Hi

Look g6 is not so good for black as he will fall behind in development. try Be3 and Qd2 to get in Bh6, weakens his position

If Black's 1st move doesn't target either e4 or d4 I'm always happy to play 1.e4 and 2.d4 for my first two moves.
