What kind of practical defense Do you like vs 1. e4?? What do you as black like vs Ruy Lopez and his cousins??

I've been using the Caro-Kann (1.e4 c6) to decent effect. That kind of eliminates having to play against the Ruy Lopez and cousins thereof, and there aren't a whole ton of transpositions.

I hated the Sicilian at first, but it's growing on me.  I usually play the Accelerated Dragon variation.

You could also give the Petrov Defence a go.

Play the French if you want fun and complex games.  The French can either be a positional game or a crazy game where black loses material for decent compensation.  Enter only the adventuresome spirit!Tongue out

I play the Scandinavian Defense (1... d5) in most games, but I am also a specialist at the Sicilian Dragon. I don't play it a lot though as there are a lot of things white can do to mess you up!

You can try the Scandinavian Defence with Nf6 :

1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Nf6

I play Sicilian: Acc Dragon, on occassion also Najdorf.

If u have good theory backup, sicilian dragon and sicilian Najdorf are very dynamic responses. You can also play the Ruy Lopez as some people said here, perfectly good, but maybe a little drawish.

That one very playable also at amateur and semi pro level. At GM level is considered an inferior defence.

Totally agree with you Smartattack. Starting to learn Najdorf you might lose a bunch of games becuase of lack of understanding but its such a good opening if you have the theory to back it up. I prefer the acc dragon to the normal dragon however.

I m experiencing many troubles with the acc dragon against very offensive players. However all sicilian dragon games, have a waek point.yugoslav attack conducted by an experienced player is demolishing.and if white manages to trade the dragon bishop, things will get tough.

Don't fear the Ruy Lopez, Guico Piano, Scotch, Kings Gambit etc.  Play them and play against them, its fun.  But if you get bored, then play the French, Scandinavian, Caro-Cann and Sicilian, they are all fun too.  I love 1)e4.  But I do think that there are some renegades out there who play 1)d4 or even wierder stuff.  I used to play the Caro-Cann as black but stopped because a friend of mine played a strange non-book variation of it that I didn't understand.

Hey, I checked out your site. What they are calling the "Lion" is known to most chess players as the "Pirc" defense. Even the variations (head, claw, etc.) already have names. If black plays c6, it is the Czech system of the Pirc. If black plays e5, then the game transposes to a line of the Philidor. There is plenty of opening theory dealing with these lines so don't buy the BS on that site about the opening being unknown and avoiding opening theory.
