Defending against 1. d4

I am having some serious trouble defending against the 1. d4 opening move.

I have been playing a friend in real one on one chess for some time now. He always plays as white and I always play as black. Just recently he has started playing 1. d4 vice 1. e4. I am fairly comfortable defending the 1 e4 position but do not have a clue how to defend against the d4. To be honest, i don't know if there is a name for this or how to look up tips on it on the internet.

If anyone can help out or give some tips I would really appreciate it!

I would recommend playing d5 and follow up with e6 and simple development like Nf6, Be7, and castles.  This is called the queen's gambit declined if white plays 1. d4 d5 2.c4

Here's an interesting article: http://www.jeremysilman.com/chess_instrctn_bgnrs/120603_crt_easy_op_rep_bk.html

This link is a bit more specific.

I love Slav defense. 1.d4 d5  2.c4  c6

You can try kings indian defense, but there s lot of theory behind it.

I have had some recent success with the chigrogin defence. d4 d5 c4 nc6!

hey there.....

first things first;

generally 1.d4 leads to closed /slow games which favor positional players as opposed to tactical players. (of course there are many exceptions to the rule)

generally 1.e4 leads to open games which favor tactical players as opposed to positional players. (of course there are many exceptions to this rule too)  .

According to  your statement am fairly comfortable defending the 1 e4 position"

I think you are tactically inclined (so am I). So how do you meet 1.d4??

here one has to look at sharp defences to 1.d4....   these are defences where  tactics and decisiveness are paramount as opposed to slow positional adjustments.

I suggest have a look at the following sharp continuations....

having gotten a grasp of the theory, play lots of blitz (5 minute games online) and occasional standard length games to get a feel for the resulting positions and seeing what you like. then add a bit more study (the grunfeld defence, kings indian, slav defence) to them and with time you will get better...

Hope this helps ...

It helps a lot! Thanks!!!

I agree, I think the blitz games will really aid in my improvement.

For beginners, it's always better to be symmetrical (1. e4 e5 or 1. d4 d5) just to become familiar with the center.  I prefer the King's Indian Defense (1... Nf6 2. c4 g6) or perhaps the Nimzoindian Defense (1... Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Bb4), developing the flanks first instead of the center.

I play 1. ... e6 to be flexible, but that being comfortable enough playing the Black side of  a French Defense.

i Frequently play on ICC Chess Club in their Bullet tourneys and have found that the question which has been asked to be genuine in that 1 d4 is most definatly not a slow game . in bullet chess at least on ICC it is meant to line up all pieces for the h7 pawn after the first opening moves a massive sac of 2 Knights, 1 rook, 1 Bishop, and 4 pawns. eventually does achieve mate as there are no pieces left in front of the black king (lol); does any one have any advice for a bullet player who loses to people who only use brute force? i have tried various defences against this and counter attacks but black always loses as he is one move behind white.

I prefer to play d5 and try to control the e4 square with knights or just develop regularly and get all my pieces in the game.
