French goes well with Nimzo/Bogo/Queen's Indian in my opinion. Currently I am trying to develop a French/Nimzo/Bogo repertoire that starts with 1.e6 against 1.d4 and 1.e4.
Going by your rating on this site though, I think the Nimzo would be a tough opening for you to play. I suggest the Queen's gambit declined or the stonewall dutch; both of these are solid, closed, and fairly easy to understand. These openings also allow you to answer 1.d4 with 1...e6, avoiding some annoying sidelines.
Hi, I'm having some trouble coming up with a defense that I like against d4 (which I play as white). I know this is kind of a bad question but I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I greatly prefer closed positions to open ones, knights to bishops, and positional play over tactics. Right now I find myself switching between something that resembles a Slav, and a pseudo-king's indian defense—but I haven't done any opening study. I love playing the French against 1. e4, if that helps. Thanks for any suggestions.
