So the French Toast line goes 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e5 Nfd7 5.Nce2!? c5 6.c3 etc.(White is in most lines going to block his f-pawn with Nf3)

The Tarrasch line (in How to Beat the French Defence) goes 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2 Nf6 4.e5 Nfd7 5.Bd3 c5 6.c3 etc.

Can someone please tell me the subtle differences between these 2 lines and why Hari has chosen the former but not the latter?

You can't really just compare these two lines. You also have to look at the other variations Black could have chosen after the White moves 3.Nc3 or 3.Nd2. In particular, the former might be met with the Winawer, 3...Bb4, which White might or might not want to face depending on how much he enjoys a sharp game, while the latter would allow 3...c5, opening the position and bringing about a very different game.

Huh why are people so dumb here?

3.Nd2 allows c5, equalizing.

There isn't an opening where Black can't equalize.

@FizzyVand, just like ThrillerFan, you seem to equalize with 3.c5 only in theory. Her are all of your games after 3.Nd2

FizzyBand

bruh I don't even play the French and even considering it's just a few offhand blitz games most of which were a long time ago
