Playing e6 first avoids the anti-dutch line. (1. d4 f5 2. Bg5 h6 3. Bh4 g5 4. e3 gxh4?? 5. Qh5#) Even if black plays properly, white has the advantage. However, playing f5 first gives you the option to play the Leningrad variation (1. d4 f5 2. c4 Nf6 3. g3 g6 4. Bg2 Bg7 5. Nf3) which is the best variation for black.

Hello, I have a question about the dutch defense and i hope anyone can give me some insight!
I want to pick up the dutch defense as my main weapon against 1.d4.
Instead of playing f5 right after 1.d4, i usually respond with e6 first. What is the concrete downside of switching up the move order like this? The reason i do it is because im afraid my opponent might play something like 2.g4 and throw me offguard.
Since im playing the french defense against 1.e4, i wouldnt mind if my opponent transposition into the french game by playing e4 on move 2.
I feel like by playing e6 first, im always getting the game i want!
So, can someone elaborate the pros and cons of maybe playing f5 first aswell as the pros and cons of playing e6 first?
Thank you! :)
