If you play the French, 1. d4 e6 is a good move order. Botvinnik used to use it in his French/Dutch days and Neil McDonald recommends it in “Starting Out: the Dutch Defence”.
If White continues with 2. c4, you’re not committed to the Dutch. With 2...d5, you transpose to the QGD and by playing 2...Nf6 you keep other options open, such as the Nimzo/QID/Bogo complex or the Benoni.
If you do want to play the Dutch, 1...e6 has the advantage of avoiding some sidelines. It does, however, discourage use of the Leningrad, so you’ll be playing the Classical or the Stonewall.
I would like to know your experience with 1. d4 e6 with Black trying to transpose to the French. I think I can cut a lot of learning with this approach, right? I have good books on 1.d4 d5, however I don’t find the time to learn all the lines, the stuff is endless. I am already learning the French since a while, so the „only“ thing I need is to learn the Dutch if white doesn’t play 1.d4 e6 2. e4.
Thanks.
