d4!!

pelly13

I know for sure that I am a patzer. But I'm still trying to improve my understanding of the game as I believe most of you do .

We were honoured by the contribution of WGM Natalia_Pogonina , wow , a real Grandmaster on this thread.And wow wasn't she pretty ? Wondered why so few of us took the opportunity to make more use of her expertise , asked her some questions or didn't anybody actualy read what she said ?

My aim is to reach at least the level of Master Patzer.

AlxMaster

Yes, I am a patzer, but I don't fight over either e4 or d4. Now read my previous post again and you will see it still makes full sense.

In resume, I'm a patzer, but not a fanboy. I don't mix chess with emotions or personal taste. At least not at such a petty level of e4 vs d4.

Although It would be interesting if a computer could precisely calculate which one is the best. But computers are way too far from being able to do that.

Listen ajian , I just found a what a Troll means in the internet slang . I thought you meant I was some tiny little Hobbit , shitting in the woods. Because that is what I am and what I do.

Now that I learned that it means you find me insulting , I believe I owe you my apollogies !

I was only trying to be a little sarcastic , poking up the fire  ,sharpening the debate. Really trying to be helpfull .

I think the theme of this thread of yours is really great . It touches on some very important questions that have been raised during the last 250 years.

@JoseO :

Yes , this remark does read different from what I actually meant . I left out the question mark.

It should read : So poor Bobby Fischer played the wrong move all of his career ? . I was sarcastically responding to a suggestion made previously about 1.d4 being the best move . I was being a Hobbit ...

You have a sharp eye and obviously read a lot of what was said .

Just because there doesn't seem to be many public statements by players 2200+ (on this subject), it isn't safe to obviously assume that they regard it as "petty". Maybe they weren't asked, or aren't as chatty and therefore have yet to give an opinion. And maybe (heh) they regard social forums as petty

najdorf96

Thing is, we don't know.

The reason why so many threads on e4 and d4 is to confuse beginners. For beginners to know is with e4, they will face with various openings more than d4. You won't increase your rating for quite sometime because most players are prepared to face e4.

But if you have talents, then e4 maybe good.

OTH, d4 is there to be explored. Many tactics and strategy can be implemented. It maybe boring, but then you know when to push your pawns forward.

Learning d4 takes shorter time than e4. I have seen many players do unnecessary sacrifice when playing d4 that brings disappointment. Also I have seen many miscalculation on d4.

What I do on d4 or c4 is to make tiny improvement on my position and capitalize my opponent mistakes. So play d4 or c4.

After 1.e4 Black basically has two options .

1.) He can try to prevend White from following up with 2.d4 . Open Games.

This Black achieves effectively by replying with the direct 1. .. e5 with the idea to answer 2.d4 with exd5 not allowing a strong White centre. Now White can be stuburn and play 2.d4 (Middle Gambit) anyway, but most players seem to prefer to prepare the d4 thrust. One direct way is i.e 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 (Scottish) .

In most of the 1.e4 e5 lines White will eventually play d4 ( or f4) and Black will exchange exd4 . You won't find many games where White can build a strong centre , because it's ususally tough to reach a c4d4 formation.

2.) He can allow the 2.d4 follow up : Half Open games.

Here Black allows White his strong centre .He can directly attack the d4 square with say 1. .. c5 (Sicilian), or  more slowly he can first devellope his pieces , allowing White some spatial advantage ,and only then start an attack on this centre. In these lines too you will hardly see a strong c4d4 or d4e4 formation for White. Exceptions are mostly found in the Sicilian and that's why this defense plays such an important role in opening-theory.

So basically : after 1.e4 White , in general ,wll not be able to get his beloved strong centre. He cannot reach a d4e4 formation because Black will exchange on d4 with i.e exd4. After this it is hard to reach a c4d4 formation.

Here lies the main difference with 1.d4 : After 1.d4 , White will usually have little problems building a strong centre with a c4d4 or d4e4 formation.

Apparently and fortunately , having a strong centre in itself is not enough to decide the game.

Chess is like ... ah say .. dating a girl for the first time. Depending on your style , your mood or whatever , you can approach her in basically two ways. You either jump her like your regular Hobbit (1.e4) or start with a nice conversation (1.d4). Both aim for the same goal : BedMate

I have been checking out the Troll :

==================================================================

In Internet slang, a troll (/ˈtrl/, /ˈtrɒl/) is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people,[1] by posting inflammatory,[2]extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a forum, chat room, or blog), either accidentally[3][4] or with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[5] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[6]

==================================================================

Key words are : inflammatory , extraneous , off-topic. It says nothing about living in the woods.

I believe I was always on-Topic . I'm less sure about the other two because my English is not that good to really understand what they mean. Inflammatory comes close I guess , but I thought I was just holding up the mirror in a sarcastic way. Saying : Look what you're saying.

Ron , stop elving me !

A Hobbit is a little Troll that lives and craps in the woods. An Elf may also belong to the myth-class , related even to Hobbit and Trolls , but is not known for having such activities.

The rozzolimo is so irritating.....Frown

GretaWasHere17

*Rossolimo

The Sicilian Rossolimo is an Anti-Sicilian, so it's supposed to take the Sicilian type player to different pawn structure as well as different positions. I always avoid it.

ajian

I know but I only play the sveshnikov so i have to deal with it.normally i play d4 so i'm used to bishop-pair vs space adv or bishop pair vs doubled pawn type of positions

You are so gross. (I gotta vomit.)

najdorf96

Indeed. The only viable anti-sicilian to me is the c3 variation. All others tend to be drawish. I used to like the Grand Prix, but stopped playing it years ago. Guess I'm saving some of my best stuff for an important game or opponent! Heh.
