Elephant Gambit

So, if you've been following my "pick a new 1.e4 defense woes" I've decided upon the Elephant Gambit and the wonderful chess.com provided me with a slightly outdated, yet solid 96 page ebook pdf available for free download. Now, community, thoughts on the Elephant Gambit?

Could you include a nice game or two so we could make an educated opinion?

The Elephant Gambit 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d5 is my main tournament opening
against king pawn openings. I used to play the Latvian Gambit 1.e4 e5
2.Nf3 f5 but switched to the Elephant Gambit because it has similar tactics
in the opening. See my article on "Elephant Gambit Miniatures" in my column
at Chessvilled called "The Search for Dragons & Mythical Chess Openings".

The ebook you have may be the Michael Basman book on the Elephant Gambit. There was another book on the Elephant Gambit by Jonathan Rogers. His line of the Elephant Gambit is 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d5 3.exd5 Bd6 guarding the e pawn and Black plays f5 on the next move.

Another line is 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d5 3.Nxe5 dxe4 4.Bc4 Qg5 which is similar
to the Latvian Gambit line 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 f5 3.Nxe5 fxe4 4.Bc4 Qg5.

DarthMausashi, I read your article about a week ago and along with the book I was sold. That was really well done.

I used the Elephant Gambit against the King's Knight Opening today and got lucky and won.

It is probably not very good, but at least it is strategically "sound" - unlike the Latvian gambit, which is almost a fatal error at move two. I have lost as white several blitz games against a Greek IM, who has even dared to apply it in regular time control games, with quite good results.

I want to announce a new chess.com tournament, an Elephant Gambit Thematic.

http://www.chess.com/tournament/elephant-gambit-thematic

All games will start with the moves 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d5 -- players will play four opponents as both white and black and will have a time limit of 3 days per move.  Games are rated and two players from each section will advance.

The tournament starts April 1 2012. I am hoping to get more participants to sign up, so we can boost this up higher on the chess.com tournament list.

Here's your chance to explore an exciting and risky opening, and to have a lot of fun playing against like-minded opponents!
