I always go for Nxe4 on this position:

But I just analyzed it and the engine says that Bc5 going into the Giuoco piano is better. What do you think?

I think u shouldn't rely on engines and read some books...

Engines cannot be trustworthy to evaluate so soon a position.

But don't be mistaken : Bc5 and Nxe4 are both fine, leading to equality.

U just have to choose the move which gets the positions u prefer.

Simplify with Nxe4, or keeping complexity with Bc5?

Yes, engines are not that good with opening play but I'm afraid this variation is even taught on the site (see: First Openings for Black and kindly find Four Knights Italian Game).

Both 4..Nxe4 and 4...Bc5 are good. 4...Nxe4 allows simplifications, so if Black is playing for a win he may prefer 4...Bc5.

Bologan tried in a recent work of his making 4...Nxe4 5.Nxe4 d5 6.Bd3 Nb4!? work, but IMO Black does not achieve much this way, either.

wow! I really like that NB4 variation!

For decades I played the Nxe4 line. It usually befuddles beginners.
