why is the French defence rarely used at the top chess level if it was really popular among the greatest chess players of the 20th century?

It's not rarely used, it's very popular at the top level. However, both the French and the Sicilian have been eclipsed in popularity by 1...e5, which is safer and simpler to play. Peter Svidler was explaining that the reason many elite players don't play the French is that it's a difficult opening to get right.

In the recent GRENKE Chess Classic I found 4 French games, although 2 of them were by Georg Meier who is a specialist.

I asked Jan Gustafsson this once. He said it was because top players are obsessed about space and the French gives you a disadvantage in space. (Unlike e5 and c5.)
