I like the French Defense. I've been playing it with success and would like to study it more deeply. Can someone tell me the names of grandmasters who frequently play the French Defense so I can look their games up in the databases.

GM Dreev plays the French more than any GM.

"I have never in my life played the French Defense, which is the dullest of all openings."

- Wilhelm Steinitz

Do not look up the games of Wilhelm Steinitz. He didn't play it.

Bottvinik, Nimzowitsch, Tarrasch Petrosian all have played well with the French

Look up John Watson who has written books on the opening.

I myself have not had good luck with it.  It is hard if you don't know the dangers of getting into a cramped position.

I hesitate to recommend another chess site here, but chessgames.com will let you look at master games played with a particular opening.

Kortchnoi used the French a lot, Ulhman was almost completely French and Nigel Short plays it a lot.

Check out Simon Williams, he plays it quite aggressive. He has a 7vid series on the french here on chess.com and has publised a book and dvd's on it.

See Vaganian destroy Reshevsky, Skopje 1976 for inspiration. Lputian had some cool ideas in the French also I think.

French defence starts with Black's response to White's 1.e4 with 1...e6. That's the French. It follows with 2.d4 d5. Different variations start with White's third move. Either e5, or Nc3, or Nd2, or exd5. It is the third most common opening move for Black after e5 and c5. It's well analyzed and you can easily find out about it on the web.

Korchnoi, Glek, Uhlmann, Botvinnik, just to name a few.
