Fried Liver or Lolli Attack?

Sort:

Both are variations of the same solid opening, Two Knights Defence. Fried Liver attacks the black king by sacrificing a knight, while the Lolli Attack forces a pawn.

Which do you prefer? I like Lolli Attack, as it isn't as risky. Don't get me wrong; I LIKE sharp openings. But I happen to value my knights immensely, and that king attack doesn't look incredibly solid. I don't think you can even windmill.

Dang (I thought for sure you were gonna get hooked)...

Don't even know what the Lolli Attack is btw...unless it's something like this:

Hooked on what?

Lolli Attack goes like this:

1.e4 e5

2.Nf3 Nc6

3.Bc4 Nf6

4.Ng5 ...

Which basically forces the f7 pawn. It also forks the rook and the queen. The Traxler variation, which plays 4.Ng5 Bc5, is generally considered a good response.

Oh, darnit, I got the wrong attack name.

Does somebody know the name for Ng5?

 It doesn't have a name...just Ng5. It can lead to the Fried Liver (4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5 Nxd5 6.Nxf7), the Lolli ( 4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5 Nxd5 6.d4), the main lines (4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5 Na5), the Fritz variation (4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5 Nd4) or the Traxler (4.Ng5 Bc5)

Hahah.

Hmm...

I tested out the reverse Ng5 move(instead of starting with e4, start with d4 and do everything backwards and it seems to be more devastating. Even though my opponent spotted the trick and defended, I still managed to get to a good vantage point and was on the verge of checkmate when I blundered and lost.

On the Fried Liver...like I mentioned in another thread (sheesh, kids these days)...

Conquistador

Well it ultimately depends on the position.

If Wikipedia isn't lying, Fried Liver is a dangerous sacrifice of a knight that attacks the black king... I prefer not to do that sort of thing until at least middle game, thank you very much....

Why would you get "hooked" on a risky attack? Sure, it may come in handy once in a while, but... yeah.

It's a sort of poll.

Do you really think that people actually USE the information they collect from polls?

AndyClifton

helltank, you have disappointed me.  Where's your youthful spirit?  My high school chess club would never have understood your somewhat wimpy and no-risk attitude (like I said before, the Fried Liver was raging for months around there)...

helltank

Actually, I'm only cautious in the opening. In the middlegame I'm just as reckless as any other teenager playing chess(do they exist?). Also, I'm not in high school yet. I will turn 12 this December... and I'm not even in America... next year I will attend my first Secondary School, though. (From what I've gathered, Secondary School and the school that comes after that are often merged in the West as "High School").
