From Gambit Discussion
Here is the 3...Bg4 line I mentioned a few posts back as a fun response to 3.Nf3.
I played a OTB blitz game a few days ago with the bird and it looked a bit like this, not much though. If I recall correctly, the game went like this:
In the above game, you should have played 6.Ng5 and black would have been in big trouble.
I am not sure about 3...Nc6, it seems to be not enough for black. In addition, his kingside is very weak, open to shots like Ng5. Probably should be listed as dubious ?!
Thanks for the insight, Conquiscador. In the game I didn't even consider 6.Ng5, I wanted to castle asap and try to maintain my e pawn. After 6...Bc5 I started to panic a bit and it went downhill from there.
If white trys to decline the gambit on move three with a move other than 3.Nf3, then black should have a slight advantage.
3.e6?! fxe6 4.Nf3 Nf6
3.g3?! dxe5 4.d3 Bc5 5.Nf3 e4
3.e3?! Nc6 4.exd6 Bxd6 5.Nf3 g5 6.g3 h5 7.Bg2 g4 8.Ng1 (8.Nh4 Be7) 8...h4 9.Ne2 Ne5
So, I think that covers all the declined variations so it is time to move on to the main line.
1.f4 e5 2.fxe5 d6 3.exd6 Bxd6 4.Nf3 after which there are two possibilities, 4...Nc6 and 4...g5
1.f4 e5 2.fxe5 d6 3.exd6 Bxd6 4.Nf3 g5 5.g3
This variation leads to a forced line
5...g4 6.Nh4 Ne7 7.d4 Ng6 and white has two choices
A: 8.Nxg6
B: 8.Ng2
Here is the 3...Bg4 line I mentioned a few posts back as a fun response to 3.Nf3.
how about 6.d4 and play in gambit style, something doesn't feel right about that setup for Black.
say 6.d4 Ngf6 7.0-0 now if 7...exd4 8.e5 Bxf3 9.Qe1! and White will have a nice initiative while Black would have to find accurate moves to maintain the balance. Of course Black doesn't have to take on d4 but then I still like White's position.
I don't know if White is actually better, especially in the first line that seems very tricky, but I would rather be White with the initiative than Black with an extra pawn but having to defend.

After 7.0-0, I think it would be better if black plays 7...Bxf3 right away.
a) 8.Qxf3 Nb6 9. Bb3 (Bxf7+ Kxf7 10. de Qd4+) Qxd4+
b) 8.Rxf3 Nb6 9. Bb3 Qxd4+ 10. Qxd4 ed 11.e5 Nfd5, and white has no attack due to his lagging development (I hope!). Black can follow up with ...f6 and castle queenside.
yea i like white in line a after 10.kh1. white has good development and open files, he can contonue with Nc3, B-e3/g5, Rad1, etc
10.Kh1 0-0-0
-11.Bxf7 Qxe4 12.Qxe4 Nxe4 - + (13.Re1 Bc5 and white cannot take the black knight because of backrank)
-11.Be3 Qxe4 12.Qxe4 Nxe4 13.Bxf7 Bc5 - +
-11. Bg5 Be7 12.Bxf7 Qxb2 and black will be the one taking over the f file - +
OK, 11.Nc3 give white compensation
The computer thinks that 6.h3 is also good for white - an alternative for the more cautious!
What about Nc6 instead of Nd7?
1.f4 e5 2.fxe5 d6 3.Nf3 Bg4 4.e4 dxe5 5.Bc4 Nc6 6.h3 Bxf3 7.Qxf3 Qd7 8.d3 Nd4 9.Qf2 b5 10.Bb3 a5 11.0-0 Nf6 12.Be3 Bc5 13.c3 Nxb3 14.axb3 Bxe3 15.Qxe3 0-0 and black has a slight advantage.
1.f4 e5 2.fxe5 d6 3.Nf3 Bg4 4.e4 dxe5 5.Bc4 Nc6 6.d3 Qd7 7.Be3 0-0-0 8.0-0 f6 and black as a slight advantage.
1.f4 e5 2.fxe5 d6 3.exd6 Bxd6 4.Nf3 g5 5.g3 g4 6.Nh4 Ne7 7.d4 Ng6 8.Ng2 Nc6 9.c3 h5 10.e4 h4 11.e5 Be7 12.Rg1 hxg3 13.hxg3 Rh2 14.Be3 Bf5 15.Nd2 Bg5 16.Qe2 Bxe3 17.Qxe3 Nce7 18.Ne4 Nd5 19.Nf6+ Nxf6 20.exf6+ Kf8 21.Bc4 Qxf6 22.0-0-0 Re8 23.Qf2 Ne7 24.Bd3 Qh6+ 25.Qf4 Bxd3 26.Qxh6+ Rxh6 27.Rxd3 was agreed drawn in the 8.Ng2 line instead of 8.Nxg6.
either way the depth and complexities of this gambit do deserve more respect than they get, and I think a club on here for analysis would be awesome. right now I planned on getting to A-rated level before working on more openings but I think it would be a very educational opening to master for resourcefullnes
