So this weekend was the North Carolina Senior Championship (Age 50 and above) to determine the NC representative of the Irwin Tournament in August 2026.
In Round 1, I am White in the following game:
A master comes by near the end of the game and wonders how we got that strange structure. Nice guy, don't get me wrong, played him many times with mixed results. He tells Black he should play ...f5 earlier. Just ...f5 and either ...d5 or ...d6 and Black should be comfortable as White has little and Black has the extra protection around his King. After my loss round 2 to the top seed, I realized I was about to play said master that said Black should play an early ...f5. With him being a huge fan of the Kings Indian Defense, and when I faced him round 3, let's just say it wasn't all roses for Black.
Don't get me wrong. Really nice guy. I love playing him. Just funny that he lost in the line that he said my opponent should have played round 1 with an early ...f5 and answer h4 with ...h5. Well, he did that, but it sure wasn't all rainbows and unicorns for Black.
Long live the Trompowsky!
