i don't under stand the definition of gambit and there purpose

ThrillerFan

It is the intentional sacrifice of material in the opening portion of the game, in most cases a pawn, in return for what the player hopes is sufficient compensation.

MOST (not all) gambits are unsound!

Yes. Basically, you offer the opponent bait, and if he takes it, he's entering a deep dark forest that you hold the map of if you master that specific gambit play.

I once discovered that the Cormorant Gambit holds an enormous secret. And almost noone plays it because objectively it's about 1.5-1.7 advantage for white. There are many gambits like that. At about 10 moves down the line, you discover you have an enormous positional advantage.

Best Gambits: Elephant and Nakhmanson

is this a good opening i just used it and checkmated pokimane

Hi Corbin that's not all bad. It looks like some Pirc variation. Could be great.

Personally I prefer pushing c5 before Nc6, and when you follow a6 with b5 you have Bb7 and your position is better spread and less cramped. You then have d5 to liberate the bishop later in the game. c5 can become a crucial checking square to start your combos.

The queen can jump to a5 or sometimes c7 to pressure h2 or b6 to pressure f2. These pressure points can be lethal when you get a knight toward the kingside. Qc7 paired with Rb8 also makes a powerful battery for middlegame tactics.

Further on gambits: the Nakhmanson is also my favorite, together with the Urusov (towards the famous Keidansky tabiya) and Blackmar-Diemer Gambit.
