Gambits and more gambits

I'm pretty low rated, but have begun to study. For one thing, I'm trying to learn an opening repertoire. There are a few openings I play but I have to confess I don't know much theory, I know a few moves of a few variations and then just try to wing it.

I'm learning the King's Gambit - I understand it has a questionable reputation, but I like it, so I want to learn more gambits to fill out my rep. I should do research on my own, and I will, but I was hoping for help just listing other gambits to check out. For example, against 1.d4 and 2.c4, I have been playing the Benko Gambit, and I love it. I can't wait to study it.

What other gambits can I look at, for both black and white? Right now I play the Alekhine defense, but I'm wondering if there is a good gambit against 1.e4 that I could learn instead? I have never heard of one but I'm hoping for it.

Thanks!

Not sure exactly what you mean, Yigor, but ty all the same, I'm going to take a look at the Latvian Gambit. I had heard of it but didn't realize what it was happy.png

Hey rajat007boss I looked up gj videos on youtube, looks cool, I will definitely check out some of those videos, thanks!

The Scandinavian has gambits although White isn't forced to accept:

1.e4 d5 2.ed Nf6 3.d4 Bg4, 3.c4 e6, 3.Nf3 Bg4

Petroff Kholmov gambit:

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 Nxe4 4.Qe2 Qe7 5.Qxe4 d6 6.d4 ed 7.ed (7.Qxd4?!) but I think White has ways to just dry up the game.

If your opponent avoids your Benko with 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 you can try the Blumenfeld Gambit, 2...c5 3.d5 b5 4.c4 e6

Thanks Mr. Penandpaper. The Blumenfeld sounds really great and is of particular interest to me, I usually get disappointed when my opponent avoids the Benko.

As a 1.e4 player the Scandinavian stuff I know I will have to learn, too. I've actually seen some of what you mentioned there. For some reason the Petroff has never really been attractive to me.

But I will be looking into the Blumenfeld for sure!

The Ruy Lopez Jaenisch might be sounder than the Latvian gambit.

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 f5

The main line of the Two Knights defence involves Black gambiting a pawn.

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5 Na5

The Ruy Lopez Marshall Attack is played, and feared even at the GM level.

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 0-0 8.c3 d5

In the Traxler (Wilkes Barre), Black gives away more than a pawn.

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5 Bc5

Ty wayne_thomas that's great, lots to think about and look at, just what I was hoping for. The Traxler sounds crazy, I recently read a bit about it in another thread. The Jaenisch seems interesting, I had never heard of that one. I've heard of the Marshall by reputation only, didn't really know much about it. So yeah, thanks again!

My pet opening against e4 is the Colorado Gambit, underrated I must say.But you will also need to study other tranpositions since this comes from the Nimzowitsch like d4

1.e4 Nc6 2. Nf3 f5

King's Gambit is popular so you need a weapon against it so I recommend the Adelaide Counter Gambit.

1.e4 Nc6 2.f4 e5 3.Nf3 f5

How about learning the Bishop's Opening where you can transpose to all sorts of openings like the Italian Game or Urusov Gambit? Taking up Bishop's Opening, you will need to learn the Italian Game too (where white, more often than not, has a fine position) which is why it's what I use.
If you like a more theoretically sound gambit then go for the Queen's Gambit which is 1.d4 d5 2. c4. The Blumenfeld and Benko which you said are also good

The Colorado looks great to me! As does the Adelaide Counter Gambit.

One thing about the Bishop's Opening that attracts me is, if it transposes to the Italian, I think I can try the Evan's Gambit. I'll also have to look up the Urosov Gambit, too. Thanks.

I do want to learn the King's Gambit, though, despite Fischer's, and other's, criticisms. Not sure why, just always wanted to learn it. I'm now just starting to read John Shaw's 'King's Gambit,' and it may be aimed at ppl with higher ratings than me, but I'm taking it slow and trying hard to mine some good ideas from it. In any case, ty again.

Yeah, right, Jaenisch / Schliemann is definitely sounder than Latvian and Duras. blitz.png

The Anderson Gambit of the Center Counter (Scandinavian) Defense.

SuperChessKnight

Yeah, you could play either the Colorado gambit, or the Icelandic gambit (Scandinavian defense e6)
