why is it so hard to learn garfield defense
ThrillerFan

There is no Grunfield or Garfield Defense.

It is the Grunfeld Defense.

The problem with trying to learn it is that there are NUMEROUS pawn structures to know. There are 5 types of pawn center. Blocked, Mobile, Static, Open, and Dynamic. The mobile center, which is defined as one side has occupancy of the center with a mobile central pawn mass, meaning the can advance, unlike say, the Classical Kings Indian, which features the blocked center.

The two openings most associated with the mobile center are the Alekhine and Grunfeld. You have to worry about the e-pawn advancing, the d-pawn advancing, etc, unlike say, the French where White has a space advantage, but the central pawns cannot move, so there are less pawn structures to know.

I specifically avoid the Alekhine and Grunfeld as both colors!
