Halloween Gambit

Yesterday, a friend showed me the halloween gambit, which looks wierd but actually works really well

and so on... it sacrifices a knight for a pawn but gains a positional advantage as well as a lot of time.

You should at least notice that theres an error.

Try writing out the moves.

Have you been successful with this opening? i.e. Did it give you a board advantage over your opponents?

there's a very good article on the Holloween gambit on Tim Krabbe's site

I have tried this opening. This was popular during the late 1800's when club players used it to blow away there opponent. Now, it is regaining popularity. This is so scary for opponent's that it came to be known as the Halloween Gambit, where White plays for an early 4th move sacrifice to gain positional advantage, gain space and cramps the opponent so that he is unable to free himself, thus in other words; make White's pieces active on each move and black's pieces become dead for each move of White. This has a lot of sub variations after standard 9 moves and Black will have to counterplay and sacrifice his Pawns/ Piece back to gain space early, else he shall be doomed if he becomes too greedy.

If you check the statistics on the Chess Openning Explorer you'll be stunned at how successful this gambit is. Of course at higher levels that's no longer true but for club players (even up to 1800 or so) this is worth a shot. I've taken to playing it in Blitz games and found it works more often than it doesn't. Black players struggle to find the best lines.
