Ideal if you are an accomplished middlegame strategist such as Petrosian or Salov or Botvinnik or Smyslov or the later Keres: the sort of player who sees the long term patterns and can wrest advantage from a fluid structure. Less than ideal if your mind thrives in the concrete lines of an opening like, say, Tal or the early Keres. Deep understanding of the position types matters. Concrete lines only matter to avoid known disadvantageous but tempting patterns. Each to their own.
