Not just more space... the b5 move threatens b4, unhinging the guard of e4. It also covers the c4 square, which makes an excellent Knight outpost on the open c-file.

I often play a6 at one point, but not very early. Sicilian is very temposensible, and there are moves that i feel must be played earlier.

In the O'Kelly variation, a6 is played early with a specific tactical idea, not just on general principles.
