How is this confusing?
How should a French player respond to the English opening?

What i mean by confusing, is that its move 2. You have a world of choices at your disposal. Just because you play an opening, doesn't mean you're always going to be able to play that opening. Even after 2 moves i can see that the position is telling me that their will be a fight for the control of d5.
The French and the English are completely unrelated. What do you play against 1.d4? Play the same against the English opening. For instance if you like the Nimzo-Indian then play this:

my137 solid advice generally, but I play the Budapest against d4 if white lets me, which also leads to totally different positions against the English if you try to play the same way.
Well if you play the Budapest against 1.d4 then you have only one option: play the Symmetrical English.
It won't give you similar positions to either the French or the Budapest, but it's your only choice as otherwise you'll be move ordered into d4 openings that aren't in your repertoire. My advice is to just quit the Budapest as it's not a great opening anyway, but if you insist then this is what you have to play against 1.c4 and 1.Nf3.

M137 I figured that may be my only hope without having to go learn the Queen's Gambit etc. And yeah Budapest isn't necessarily great but I'm never going to be a master so I'm not too worried about that. Thanks for your help!

The English opening is basically the sicilian defence but for white. How would you respond to the sicilian? Personally, I play the grand prix attack!
I'm used to playing the French defense and the English opening always flummoxes me. Any suggestions for a good response that gets into positions similar to French or is it pretty much impossible due to that first pawn move?
