How to react to Van't Kruij's opening?

I've played with someone using 1.e3 2.Qf3. as a common opening. I've researched about it, but couldn't find anything about this specific Van't Kruij's use. What moves do you suggest for Black, assuming I'm a beginner?

It really is not good to bring out your queen early. Play d5 on move one and then Nf6 and you will be in great shape. If your opponent goes b3 on move two, go e5 and play Nc6 to defend the pawn. If 2. Nf3, then Nf6 still leaves you in good shape.

There is very little theory regarding 1. e3 or 1. d3, the ideas are usually taken from the French and the Pirc reversed, but with some modifications due to the extra tempo for White. I would just simply play 1. e3 e5 2. Qf3 Nf6 and I don't see any immediate threats arising. Thereafter play d5 if it is possible, develop other pieces, castle and you will be OK.

1 e3 is fine, but 2 Qf3 is premature

Van't Kruijs  opening 1. e3 followed by 2. d3 3. Nd2 and 4 Ne2 is playable against any defense by Black. I played and won many games with it in 10 min blitz against average (up to 1800 rated) players.  If the opening(s) is really that bad then what am I (or my opponents) are missing? The opening is fun to play and can really confuse unprepared opponents. Go give it a try .

1. e3 e5 2. d3 d5 3. Nd2 Nc6 4. Ne2 Nf6 5. Ng3 Bd6 6. e4 d4 7. Nb3 Be6 8. Be2 O-O 9. O-O b6 10. f4 exf4 11. Bxf4 Bxf4 12. Rxf4 Ne5 13. h3 c5 14. Qd2 Qd6 15. Rxf6 gxf6 16. Nh5 Qe7 17. Qh6 Ng6 18. Qg7# 1-0

According to the analysis:

e3
is a book move
+0.04
e3 is a weak first move that doesn't do enough to control the center.

A 1950 ELO opponent once played this opening against me. I didn't yet know what it is called at that time. I only found out later. I countered with a KID and won.

1 e3 usually just transposes to tame variations of other openings.

Many years ago, back in the 90s, I stumbled across Van't Kruij's in one of the opening books (ECO or Batsford's, don't recall which). While it wasn't recommended, I sometimes like to play around with obscure openings just for the variety. I was playing against the ChessMaster 4000 back then, and had a nice win against "Fischer-Style" (no, it didn't play like Fischer, despite the name happy.png ), which I still have.

1 e3 is the Van't Kruijs (aka Can't Krush) you played it perfectly!! Bravo!

After 1... e6 or 1... Nf6 it's hard for white to avoid some generic Colle position. Avoid the more interesting lines that white will know how to navigate better, like 1... e5

Reaction, you say? Instead of screaming have a mid-strength beer and a good laugh.

The Van 't Kruijs opening is probably the best first moves with a3 and e4
