Nothing simple to play agianst it.  Nothing fun and tactical without knowing a ton of theory.  No risks to take!!!

Any opening suggestion against 1.d4 for a fun, exciting tactical game, without bookloads of theory to learn?

I love forums.

Exciting and tactical against d4 equals theory.  You are going to have to play something unbalanced like the KID, Grunfeld, etc.  Of course, all openings have some tactics.  Might I suggest the Slav with Bf5?  It's pretty straightforward, there are some nice traps and tactics, black can get equal positions and better, and you can use it as a complete answer to 1.  d4.  Answer 1. d4 with d5 and whenever White plays c4 play c6.

Hmmm....

Try the albin countergambit.

Play the Dutch! Lots of risk. Lots of tactics. Unstable pawn structure.

At least it's fun.

i am 1d4 player and for black against d4 i have tried a lot of stuff and the only two I liked where the nimzo indian and the grunfeld which is the one I use in my games

Lol, i'm trying to learn KID and there are tons of lines I should know... Benko Gambit is fine.

I'll throw in another vote for the benko gambit. Give it a few tries, I think it'll be exactly what you're looking for.

I had the same problem. I tried a LOT of openings, but finally settled upon the Benoni.

If you want an acceptable game with NO theory, play the QG accepted. :)

You might look at the chigorin defense.  (1 d4 d5 2 c4 Nc6).  Its probably not 100% sound for high level players, but you get alot of chances for active piece play and, in the words of Jeremy Silman, "If white as much as blinks you have a chance to snatch the initiative."

Personally I think the Grunfeld is good against d4.  In my opinion it's like the sicilian of d4, or at least, it's as close as we're going to get.  It leads to a fairly tactical game with strong possibilities of an attack for both black and white.

Strongly agreed.

I've been enjoying the Classical Dutch.

its really hard to find a 1.d4 response thats sound, tactical, and doesnt have much theory. the main reason is half the players want to play something tactical, and being few choices in 1.d4 all of the good ones are going to be booked.

I just play the grunfeld. super theoritcal, but its actually fun to study and is one of the least liked from the white players side.

Yeah, gotta love the Grunfeld, I've had a lot of success with it as well.

This is why 1. d4 is the best opening move in my opinion, more solid that 1. e4, a lot of players dread facing d4 as black, whereas the sicilian is very effective against e4.

If I am playing white I hate to see the slav come at me. It's very solid. We saw no shortage of it in the Anand-Topalov match.

I want a magic unicorn to crap marshmellows on my pillow every morning.  That ain't gonna happen either.

You want a good defense?  Learn one.  You can't escape theory and expect to get anywhere.  Not that openings should be the first thing you learn . . . you really ought not worry about theory at all until you understand the basics of position play.

But there are no silver bullets.  There is only blood, toil, sweat, and tears, preparation and practice, learning by your own mistakes.

If it was easy, it would be Parcheesi.

Excellent advice...
