I need tips for Nimzo-Larsen/Modern Defense openings

I have been playing it with very large failures and small successes (as I am a total 400elo noob). I have been told to not play the Nimzo-Larsen as it is pointless by a person before but I want to stick to it as well as the Modern Defense. I am requesting tips for how to play these openings if anyone is willing to provide them. I don't think the Larsen attack has a theory behind how you should play it which is mainly why I am sticking to it.

I start off the Larsen attack with pawn to b3, bishop to b2, knight to f3, and pawn to e3, as well as sometimes moving the bishop to b5 to trade off for a knight if there is one already on c6.

Study grandmaster games with it.

Hate to break it to you, but it is full of theory.

Back in August 2010, an IM named Alexander Matros, then 2447, would play theoretical openings against other 2400+ players, and think like you and figure he could just outplay others in chess.

I, 1999 at the time (over the board, not online), proved him wrong.  I actually knew the theory of what is considered the "Main line" better than he did actually, and even came up with a novelty.

And they are right, you should not be trying to learn Larsen's Opening or the Modern Defense at your level.

You should be learning OPENING CONCEPTS.  Control of the center.  Answer e4 with e5 and d4 with d5.  DO NOT STUDY OPENINGS until at least 1600.  Your opponents will not know them anyway.  Therefore, memorizing a bunch of lines is UTTERLY USELESS!

You face some other 400 noob and they play, as Black, 1.b3 Nf6 2.Bb2 Nc6.  Now what?  Studying 1.b3 theory did you nothing here!

Trust people of significantly higher rating when they tell you this and do not argue with them.  It would be like me trying to argue with Robert Irvine how to cook or with Michael Jordan on the right way to play basketball!

Understood, I guess it isn't really some special opening which is unpredictable. I'll most likely switch to openings which are easier to play for beginners. Thank you for the information.

if you really are a 400 rated noob, your opening choice will make relatively little difference, especially with something sturdy like the larsen.

idk what the point of thrillerfan's example there was, you dont play crooked openings thinking you can wing em....at the 2xxx level! you are nowhere near that. Play reasonable moves that dont get you into lost positions by move 15 and then just focus on tactical motifs. Yoou have a good 600-800 points of tactics before you should pay much attention to openings.
