I vividly recall a female swimming star...

This young lady had "all the curves in all the right places", and who really "complains" about 'modern' swimming outfits...

She was a national swimming legend and explained how this came to be. Her coach said to her what do you want out of swimming; she said 'gold medals' her coach said "you are very good but not good enough 4 golds", she got second and third opinions...

Over time she specialised in an unusual swimming stroke like breast stroke or back stroke and became the best in the world at that instead. Simply there were to many far better freestyle mainstream swimmers, she realsied this and adapted.

Learn the Sicilian or Ruy Lopez and try and compete when everyone else in the world is using those main stream popular fashionable openings...

Simply put you cannot do it, there are way to many variations of those two openings for anyone to get really good at and have anything like a normal life; unless you are prepared to spend 20 years learning them.

What of pesky things like jobs and money and no one; no one makes money from chess. Sure the top proz get paid and what of the 20 years living on a bowl of rice a day to climb to those heights ???

What of relationships and lawns to mow and gym workouts? So ok, let us say you live and breathe chess and ignore everything else in life including showering. What of tactics and end games and all those other pesky chess study ideas.

Get the idea, choose a solid proven chess opening like i did; i even wrote a book about it. A simple proven hybrid opening based on the Caro Kann for players of the Black pieces.

I explain why this is the best and most perfect opening for Black games and my book has sold in five countries so far. I get far better by not following the main stream crowd but rather perfecting a proven weapon for killing White.

I know i am too old and senile to ever hope for a gold medal unless some plague wipes out most of the worlds 6 billion people, but i am getting better and i get pleasure from Killing White and their common openings.

Now i am writing another book the perfect White chess opening and why. So my current book explains why the French, Sicilian and KID are terrible openings for newer players and why Whites main weapons are terrible for newer players as well.

So pick a solid lesser known opening and turn it into a machine of death to all your enemies an know when you lose you messed up and your opening was not the cause of your loss; enjoy chess... Happy Days...

"...no one makes money from chess."

Joke of the evening :-)

The opposite is true for many individuals.

Is he talking about Ester Willaims ??

You see a lot of strange things in these forums.

There are shortcuts in all the openings. You don't have to play mainlines.

I always found it amusing how people think playing non mainline openings constitutes a 'surprise'. Truth is, everyone is lazy and tries to avoid theory and opponents preparation by doing the same thing.

I see 'offbeat' tries such as the veresov or smith morra gambit 5x as much as I see a mainiline nimzo or maroczy bind.

A real surprise would be if someone actually played theory against me.

There are no "perfect" chess openings for patzers... sorry for that.

I'd be much more interested in learning about that budding swim star and see a few bikini pictures of her.

Tom, get back to studying chess! ;)

I think you should say backstroke and butterfly. Or medley. Breaststroke is just too mainstream. I guess 95% of all players here don't know how to swim these 2.

Backstroke isn't all that hard. The hardest part is trying not to bump your head on the edge of the swimming pool.

That's correct. To be honest, none of the strokes is hard. Laughing

Rather later in life than I should have done, I'm realising confidence and presentation have more to do with success than content.

Yeah i thought it kool being able to say breaststroke without gettin flamed. So thats kool everyone is making gold out of chess. I was feeling really bad for NM and IM and wondering how they were managing to pay little things like health insurance.

Now i can sleep far better tonight that people can earn a living wage from chess i think i will direct my energies to highlighting the needs of abused animals and neglected children. I am glad there is lots of people making money outta chess, i musta missed that news headlines.

And...

Yeah that lady was real nice !!!! (Esther Williams); and sorry swimmers wear one piece outfits and not bikinis...

Gotta run i am off to the personal ads to place an ad to coach chess at $45/hr, i really wish i had of realised there was money from chess ages ago...
