If KID = King's Indian Defense, then I dont understand what you're saying. AFAIK King's Indian is perfectly fine on higher levels, too. Maybe not in fashion right now, but that doesnt mean its not solid.

Has it even been played once in WCC competition since Anand lost the title a decade and a half ago?

The KID is relatively rare at the highest level, not because it's judged to be ultimately unsound but because it's judged to present a higher practical likelihood of Black falling into a difficult position and then, with a further inaccuracy, falling into a lost position. Sound but not preferred. Why, the thinking goes, should you bother when you can play other sound openings (QGD, Nimzo, Gruenfeld) where you're at somewhat less risk of slipping into a bad position?
