2. Qe2

Only the 4th most common choice, but the winningest of those 4:

2.d4 81,549
40% 32.3% 27.7%
2.d3 6,658
40.2% 29.2% 30.7%
2.Nf3 1,824
36.9% 26.3% 36.8%
2.Qe2 1,353
45.4% 24.8% 29.8%

I'm taking the point of view of black: Whats a good way top play vs open games and the kings indian attack?

chesshole

lol: 45.4% of 1,353 is a whopping 614 examples of White dominating the French, while the 81,549 chumps who settled for d4 ended up with only 32,620 wins.

Of course you knew I meant percentage wise.  Anyway such stats are largely meaningless.  However I didn't want to throw 2. Qe2 out there as a suggestion without some backup.

DrSpudnik

Since I started playing the French over 20 years ago, I have only faced 2.Qe2 once, here on chess.com. The game was a draw.

I've considered it, the Tarrasch, and two forms of the Exchange: 4. Bd3 and 4. c4.  Not overjoyed with any of them.

TheBlueKnight9

So far I have not seen Qe2......Seems rare.

what's the problem with d5 and just continuing to play the french?

well acting like a jackass to the people who may help you is a good way to go about it.

if you're scared of the exchange variation then just stop playing the french, there is no way to avoid it. what do you play after e4 e6 d4?? i'm guessing you play d5, well guess what - white can simply choose to capture on d5. if are willing to go into the exchange after 2. d4 there is no point in trying to avoid it after 2. nf3 or whatever other second move you find so terrifying.

The first time someone played 2.c4 against me, we swapped off most of the pieces and I offered him a draw about move 20. A few months later, I played the White side of a French with 2.c4 and won.

I've gone from disrespecting the Exchange as a coward's choice, to playing it via 2.c4.

molokombo

well i have played the french exclusively against e4 for pretty much the whole time i've been playing chess. and incidentally when i play 1.e4 as white i play 2. nf3 against the french - but don't go into the exchange variation after 2... d5. yes, that's right - it also leads to other lines!

i'll say this again: if you don't mind going into the exchange after 2. d4 why spend any time trying to avoid it after a different second move?

Ziryab

My best line against the Exchange is not as good if the Exchange follows 2.c4.

it's not optimal after 2. nf3 either, why are you having a hard time understanding this?
