Hey, just trying to up my game....recently joined and have been playing around with Indian Defence.  How do you play Indian Defence if white's first move is king's pawn d4, followed by a push to d5 putting pressure on my knight?  I've been stepping all over myself...

I don't think you described an "Indian Defense".

I think you might have played 1 d4 Nc6 2 d5 which is an irregular opening called the "Queen's Knight Defense". It is very unpopular because of the difficulties it causes (which you have noticed.)

Indian defenses are characterized by 1 d4 Nf6 and there are thousands of variations. There is an article here about a new book offering instruction in some of the many variations- http://www.chess.com/article/view/exclusive-peek-at-modernized-the-kings-indian-defense-by-gm-dejan-bojkov-for-chesscom-members

I spoke too soon. Apparently, the line you described is sometimes known as the Bozo Indian. It was discussed in a previous thread-http://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-openings/bozo-indian---or-just

/It is not a joke.
