I don't like the ...Nc6 line at all, but until you played 6.Nd5, which scores 64% wins 1600-2000, white's stats were losing, and are 33:65 in the 6.e3 "main line".

your 6...Qa4 is only the 4th most popular reply by black, so you're counting on a longshot with that game, and 2nd most popular 6...Qe4 is good for statistical and eval equality

I really should be doing homework on my own hartlaub charlick line to improve on the lines i do poorly in.

Well, of course the practical chances in the “2… d6” line are good if you blindly assume 3. exd6. Instead, 3. Nf3 and White is nearly +2!

If I could guarantee that everybody I played against as Black played 3. exd6 against the Hartlaub-Charlick, I’d consider giving it a good old-fashioned college try.

I mean it is kinda refuted, and not really a good opening if your opponent knows what they are doing.
