Talk with him about it. If you trust you coach and if he is good, do as he say - he do it for you own best.

I'm 1800 right now and I have a private chess coach.
I want to play the Sicilian Schevenigen but he tells me to just do the same openings as him.
I'm a non-rated beginner, so perhaps that's why I don't understand it when you say that you don't play the Sicilian. How can you avoid not playing at least part of the opening line in competition when Black plays 1)...c5?
When I checked out the opening of the day - B34: Sicilian Defense: Accelerated Dragon, Modern Variation - I found this game played in 2005 by two 2300 rated players. Black gets mated after only 22 moves!

Play any move other than 1.e4.
Seems to me that if your style is safe and passive then it would be a GOOD idea to learn the Sicilian. Work on your weak points as well as your strong points and you will have a better concept of how to fight against other lines of thought. Even if you don't ultimately play it on a regular basis, it is a very common open and you cannot be hurt in the long run by familiarizing yourself with its intricacies.
I dont think the sicilian suits anyone under 1800 otb ..... its simply too complex and there is too much theory to keep up with. I didnt start using the sicilian in my tourney games until I was 2000, before that I played Alekhines defense and french but after I hit 1800 I stopped playing alekhines.......

This must have been a blitz game, I know Konjevic and he is a strong player.
Maybe they were joking or something ?
Hello. I quit chess for quite a while and then I started to get my interest back. I'm 1800 right now and I have a private chess coach. He has the same style as me, which is a safe passive but solid type, and so he tells me to play the same openings as him. I want to play the Sicilian Schevenigen but he tells me to just do the same openings as him. That's fine but I don't want to memorize all the openings that he plays only to hate it later on. Is there a reason he won't let me play the Sicilian? Is it because the Sicilian is only for attacking players? Or does he think I'm not ready for it yet and that my playing strength is way too low? What do you think I should do? Thanks.
Based on my experience. u should always listen to your heart.Like you say you may hate it later. So see how far you can go with sicilian first before you listen to your coach advice.
Yeah, 20...Rc8 seems like a huge blunder.
You'll notice that these two guys are from the same club, and possibly one of them needed a win for the norm or something...
No way an experienced FM would play like this.

Yeah I would agree. Although I think it's possible for a lower player to play the sicilian, it's far from the ideal time because there is just so much going on, most of which will be way over the head of most b class (not that higher players have it easy either, but they have a better chance of being able to figure it out) players and under. I think that in general at that level white would have the better practical chances, as he can make do with just attacking quite often, having a nice central position and space, while black's play is more subtle and long term.
I am from the UK and I am curious to know if it is common practice in America for players to have a Chess Coach, how much does this cost you and how does it work online or how ??
Some people choose to get a coach while many many others now use mr. internet and simply playing as their coach. I'm sure if you ask around amongst American masters many of them have never had a lesson!
I HATE playing against it.. its just so ANNOYING, i alos HATE playing with it..
But i HATE playing d4.. so i gotta play e4.. Which always leads to SICILIAN.. ARG, so annoying,
this is my problem.. i'm gonna have to find a new playing style..
I hate sicilian because it somehow always manages to bring a tied game.. but i hate playing with it cause its just that type of game where i always screw up, i'd say its better to play with it then against it.. so start with an opening where you won;t have to face it.. but pratice using it.. where in cases if your opponent plays e4.. c5 would be best (e5 is what i use but stronger is c5)
Sorry im just venting.. hope this helped!
I think we share the same sentiments. It irritates me to face the Sicilian Defense so I essay the Closed Sicilian or the Grand Prix Attack to fight it. But now, I'm defending the Sicilian Dragon, if someone uses the Grand Prix attack against me, I know how to fight it.
At one point in time, I use the Philidor's defense because only few people whom I know plays it, and most of the time, players would dedicate their time learning the Sicilian Defense rather than the Philidor.
My mentality is that: "I'm the only one (in my group or club) who plays the Philidor defense". If they try to imitate my repertoire or system, they find the position to be cramped
Hmmm...I love playing the Sicilian in e4 games because black can fight for the center and if white makes a mistake, you can usually pounce on it. But if the Sicilian's not your style, there's always other defenses, like the Marshall defence.
Like you said, it's your style.
