I think this variation with 5.Qe2 is just transposing to the normal petroff 3.Nxe5 d6 4.Nf3 Nxe4 5.Qe2 Qe7 6.d3 variations.

However, white should be better after 5.Be2 d6 6.Nc3 followed by d4, rather than the d3 you played, when whites space and development advantage should give a significant edge.

The problem with trying to 'invent"  an opening is chess has been around for about 500 years in its present form and a lot of people have had time to do try and do the same.

In this case,3...Qe7 dates back to 1561 where it was mentioned by Ruy Lopez (Petroff's Defence by Forintos & Hagg Batsford 1983)

I see that move a lot from beginners... so I don't think you get to name it ;)

I call it "I put my queen on a bad square because I don't know any better" variation.  Or maybe "because I think saying 'check' means my position is better"  Something along those lines.

A tad harsh. I wouldn't want to discourage anyone from investigating positions but I would suggest that blithly re-naming an opening variation that has been around since the 16th century after oneself is perhaps (and only perhaps) a bit presumptious?

Petroff´s  main lines are so boring that i wouldn´t discourage the guy to use this line. At least, he gets the opponent out of the books.

Yeah, the petroff isn't my favorite as white, that's for sure... but if he doesn't like it as black it seems easier to avoid e.g. 2...Nc6.
