KID - The Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch saves the day

Everybody knows the power of the black light squared bishop in the closed KID structure. Waiting in his cave like the killer rabbit of Caerbannog waiting to jump for the throat of the enemy king.

Sometimes one last resort ist the so called holy hand grenade of Antioch - the rook on c1 which shall be used just right in time or as written in the book of armaments: "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it."

As seen in move 25 of Ragger vs. Djukic Rxc8 saves the day.

I remembered this game when playing a thematic tournament here in 2013 and I was close to being mated. Again 19.Rxc8 saved the White King.

Recently I've seen "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" again and I've thought about the analogy which I just wanted to share - together with the idea of the exchange sacrifice on c8, which is also quite interesting. I hope my dear opponent is also fine with sharing the game.

The analogies rook/grenade and bishop/rabbit look far-fetched. tongue.png

I don't think that it is with respect to the specific movie scene. However, I have to admit that I've always been attracted to stories which might be told on the chess board such as e.g. "Scachs d'amor" ( http://www.scachsdamor.org/ ) from the late 15th century.  So, I might be a little bit biased towards that topic :-)

All right, at least, it's kinda poetic and hilarious. wink.png

My rating is not high enough to judge on the soundness of the KID. I play it with black as well but the move RxBc8 is still one of my constant fears. The best mating attack can turn into a hopeless position within a second. It just stresses the importance of the Bishop.

I have a problem with playing against KID. But my problem is sort of unique: I am not worried about king side pawn storm by black. My main issue is that my black opponents seem to do nothing. How do I proceed in that situation? What is white's plan of attack if black is passive?

Nice analogy! I love the rabbit scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail?

Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three.
