i love the king's gambit and i prefer the 3. Nf3 lines.

i used to play the king's gambit and i prefer Bc4 lines... but that was when i just started playing. Bc4 has a lot of traps black should watch out for

It has been said by masters of old that one plays Nf3 if a draw is okay and Bc4 to win. I think both are playable, but perhaps Bc4 is more interesting, with less theoretical exploration having been done and some interesting ideas which are fun to play in blitz, and maybe standard...although I'd never play this opening OTB.

For white Bc4 is better?

For white

Nf3 > Bc4.

For white it's unclear which is better. I suspect that there is more room for improvements upon theory, or at least novelties, in the 3. Bc4 lines.

I agree for Nf3, safe h4 at the very beginning

What is the alternative to Nf3 or Bc4 with good reason for play?

All analyzes but in practice always something diferent :)

^Not sure what you mean. After 2...exf4 there are only two good moves.

3.d4 and 3.Nc3 can both be answered by 3...Qh4+ 4.Ke2 Qe7!

That leaves 3.Be2, where 3...f5! 4.exf5 Qh4+ 5.Kf1 d5! looks like a powerful remedy.

I agree

This is a really tough question. Pfren and I have participated in some deep discussions with King's Gambit authors including John Shaw and Thomas Johansson.

I still don't know the answer definitively.  One problem with 3.Nf3 is that the Kieseritzky line gives Black good play. It's very complicated and there's quite a bit to memorize. Black has 5...d6 in the main line which Shaw gives as at least equal. But Black could also play 5...Nc6!? which gives interesting practical chances to both sides.

I'm currently leaning towards the Quaade lines with 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Nf3 g5 4.Nc3 as White's best try.

In the end though, the King's Gambit is becoming problematic to play in correspondence and elite tournaments. Thomas Johansson has written,

"'unfortunately modern computers soon came up with some strong improvements for black, in the theoretical main line, i.e. the Kieseritzky Gambit. These new ideas are almost certainly the reason why the King's Gambit has almost vanished from grandmaster practise the last few years'
