Lion cannot... but stronger player can say? And perhap tell us why the Saemich is much less popular, apparently... at one point was the main way to defeat the KID?

There is a gambit line for Black (involving ... c5) that seems to have taken most of the winning chances out of the Saemish. As far as I know.

The winning chances are only gone if white accepts the gambit.

LIONSHAPEDBOX

@Optimissed... am sure GM Van Wely is grateful... why not show us some of your best KID wins?

LIONSHAPEDBOX

Are you talking about playing as White only?

LIONSHAPEDBOX

Anyway, Lion just get crushed on L site by 4pawn attack, sigh... anybody for Nimzo?

WackChiRain

KID is great as it's so plan bases... but things like the aforementioned 4pawn attack can be hard unless you know exactly what to do... and yeah I used to play that nimzo (another opening based a lot on planning) with some decent success... my go to right now is the Dutch Leningrad as it usually surprises my opponents and gets me a KID style structure

LIONSHAPEDBOX

Lion like QGD... but master player say is no good, is boring, you can only draw not win? Master player say play KID or Semi Slav... Lion win... except Lion don't win, Lion get crushed?

LIONSHAPEDBOX

Lol... yes Semi Slav is very popular. People think that by memorize 9 moves or whatever they gonna win... but can get very tough. And yes... master dudes advise that defence very much.

blueemu

Lion, how did your Four Pawns Attack game go? Black should be fine in that line if he plays the opening accurately.

LIONSHAPEDBOX

Exactly... they just play triangle style and expect a safe but winning position. Is like somebody blitzing a basic KID setup... then not having a clue.

LIONSHAPEDBOX

@bluemu... yes, if one knows what to do the 4 pawn attack is rubbish, rarely seen at top level... i remembered that one goes for an early c5, but forgot if you castle first... and just fumbled about.

LIONSHAPEDBOX

Is becoming more and more obvious... to play stuff like KID or Semi Slav one needs to get a good dvd set or class Books and do so properly.

Lion is very comfortable with Reti and Sicilian... but playing against d4 is the problem... any way one can play a Sicilian against d4? Am guessing not...

LIONSHAPEDBOX

Hey pfren... for somebody who enjoys the Sicilian, which d4 defence would give a similar feel? Am guessing QGD or Benoni.

Answering your question, I don't think the Benoni gives a similar feel to the Sicilian. I play both. With the Sicilian I generally feel in control, unless I've made a miscalculation. With the Benoni, I almost never feel in control. I would suggest that the NID is the d4 defence most like the Sicilian.

Yes, in control is a good phrase... Sicilian feel good, even though i mostly play a wimpy Kan or taimanov style. With KID i most Never feel in control... even 4 points clear. Maybe a kind of Nimzo QGD hybrid style might work.

No d4 defense gives a similar feel to the sicilian. You cannot play the sicilian against 1. d4.

Dutch? Leningrad Dutch?

Just played today.

LIONSHAPEDBOX

Hmm... thx for those guys. Heart says KID... Head says QGD or Nimzo.

RIP Michelle.
