Try the Kings Indian. You can play that against most White setups. And it is fun and you will learn a lot.
The Nimzoindian is a bit more correct, but that doesn't matter at your level. And you can only play it against a White d4,c4,Nc3-setup. So you will have to learn another opening against the d4,c4,Nf3-setup and the Catalan (with g3).
Hi, I am quite new to chess and wanted to try king's indian or nimzo-indian defence. I am a player with around 1000, do you have any tips which opening would be better for me and why?
