Learning d4 structures

Hello,

I want to switch from 1.e4 to 1.d4 because I think that I can get more out of d4 and the structures are more favorable for me. I also thought about Nf3 but I will probably choose d4 with some catalan set ups. To learn the theory I will learn the two volumes of Avrukh. I also want to learn structural ideas and therefore I wanted to ask after a book about d4 structures (catalan, Benoni, slav etc.) or a modern game collection of d4 games.

"I think that I can get more out of d4" ++ Dream on. At the Yekaterinburg Candidates' 1 e4 was both played more and more successful. Against 1 d4 the Grünfeld was played 5 games: all 5 draws.

"To learn the theory I will learn the two volumes of Avrukh." ++ That is the wrong approach. If you want to play it, then just play it. No need to study 2 volumes before. You can always look up after you played a game.

"a modern game collection of d4 games" ++ Any data base. I suggest to study the games of the Yekaterinburg Candidates Tournament.

What's the point? I am not a Super GM and according to data bases d4 wins more often but this is not club level chess.

At club level it does not matter if you play 1 e4, 1 d4, 1 c4, 1 Nf3, 1 f4, 1 g3, 1 b3, 1 a3, 1 c3, 1 d3, 1 e3, 1 Nc3, 1 h3, 1 g4, 1 b4, 1 a4, 1 Na3, 1 Nh3. The game will be decided by tactics, not by the opening.

I'm guessing you have the 1.d4 books from Quality Chess written by Avrukh.

Chess Structures by Rios is also from Quality Chess.

Don't have it with me, but not sure about Catalan specific content. I know there is some Benoni and Slav material in it.

There are as much drawing lines in the Ruy Lopez, the Scotch and the Italian. Playing for the advantage requires a tremondous work on openings in order to avoid them to the most of one's extent. Until 2300+ I'm not sure Black can perfectly defend against popular variations like 3.f3, or any russian system. Of course, e4 scores best and has more marge for manoeuver, but that hardly matters until you're at the candidates.

there is no catalan family of structures in rios's book. i have it. i also have avrukh's catalan books, from the first to the most recent version. i haven't read even 10% of it but i'm pretty sure it's a ton of work just sorting out the move orders if you intend to follow his catalan. i would suggest sielecki's catalan instead, with fewer lines to learn and basically just one book. i have used it to get to 2000 rating and even beyond that i can eke out wins so it should still be viable past 2000. however, if you make it past 2200 you should probably start using avrukh's book as you need the sophisticated move orders at that point.

Are there any games in the book of Sielecki?

if you mean complete games, there are some but they are few. it's a repertoire book that mostly cuts it after move 20 or so. and also at the time he wrote it he was trying to improve on existing games then.
